Summer Challenge Week 6: Crazy Bet

Title: Crazy Bet
Length: One-shot
A/N: Written for the gacktjob_fics Summer Challenge 2013, week 6. Prompt is heat wave.  I wanted there to be a dog, but since I couldn't decide exactly when this fic happened, I couldn't decide what the dog's name was, so... no name dog.  Whoops.

Summary: A little friendly competition between the boys gets a bit sticky as the temperatures climb.

He laid with his eyes shut on top of the sheets, all of the blankets kicked to the floor long ago.  The breeze from the fan was the only slightly cool thing about the room.  It was hot, hot, hot.  For a moment, he allowed himself to curse his stubbornness.  If he didn’t hate losing so much, he could just go and turn on the air conditioning.

Unfortunately for him, he did hate losing that much.  Gackt sighed and wondered again how in the world You had come up with this bet.  Who bets on who can go the longest without turning on the air conditioning just when the weather heats up?

The only good reason for not using the air conditioning when it’s this hot outside, in Gackt’s opinion, was if it was broken.

However, he refused to lose the bet.  He’d just lay around naked to keep cool, but You had also stipulated that going naked was cheating.  Gackt still couldn’t figure out what about it was cheating, but he’d agreed to the rules, so there was no going back now.  His shirt clung to his body, damp with sweat and begging to come off.  Was going shirtless against the rules?  He didn’t really want to call and ask.

His phone went off, signaling that he had a text message.  It was from You, asking if he was ready to give in yet.  So You hadn’t given up yet, either.  “Damn.”  He muttered, typed a quick message (“As if I’d give up already!”) and sent it.  Chachamaru had already dropped out yesterday, claiming that he was too old to be messing around like this in the heat.  Gackt figured the guitarist was just being wussy.  Who was he to complain about that, though?  He was looking forward to the punishment games when this was all over—especially since he was going to win.

He set his phone aside, and flopped back on the mattress, closing his eyes and enjoying the breeze from the fan again.  Soon he’d have to get up—even in this heat he could only stand the inactivity for so long.  Still, just a few more minutes feeling the cool puff of air on his sweaty skin wouldn’t hurt.

Something warm and decidedly furry hopped up on the bed and laid itself across his face.  There was a puppy laying on his face.  Normally, this wouldn’t irritate him that much (although he’d rather they laid somewhere besides his face), but it was just too hot for something so warm and fuzzy to be pressed against his skin.  He shoved the little dog away, but it came right back, and started to lick his face.  Cracking open an eyelid, he moved to shove it away again, but then the guilt overcame him.  A small bout of overly warm snuggles and a little playing ensued, and when it was all over, Gackt was even hotter than before.

What was it about animals that no matter how hot it got they still seemed to want to share their body heat with you?

Well, if it was going to be this hot anyway, he may as well get up and do something useful.  First, though, he decided to go and get a nice, cold drink.  Inside the refrigerator was what remained of a small army of bottles of water that he had bought when he realized how serious You was going to be about this challenge.  If he was going to be hot, he knew better than to let himself get dehydrated.

Gackt could admit that he didn’t need to have bottles of water, there was a filter for water and all, but there was just something satisfying about opening a fresh, icy cold bottle of water.  And, well, as long as he recycled it shouldn’t matter too much.

His phone went off again as he was drinking, this time someone was calling him.  He checked the caller ID while he swallowed—it was Chachamaru.  “Hey, what’s up?”

“Still wallowing in the heat?”  Chachamaru asked, and Gackt silently resolved to get him back for taunting him like this.

“Yeah,” he said, careful not to let on about his thoughts for future revenge, “I was just planning on doing some exercising.”

Chachamaru spluttered.  “In this heat!  You’re crazy.  At least wait until the evening.”

Gackt shook his head stubbornly, even though Chachamaru couldn’t see him.  “Nope.  I’m going to exercise now.  Then I’ll have some more water and lay around again.”

“You really are Maou-sama.”  Chachamaru said, and Gackt laughed.  “Working out when it’s hot as hell.  Sure this isn’t your natural environment?”

“Well, since it is, I guess I’ll be winning.  Maybe we should tell You to give in, since it’s so hopeless.”  Gackt replied.  “Did you need something?”

“Just checking to see if you’re still crazy.”

“What do you mean, still?”  Gackt said, faking irritation.  “Why don’t you call You and taunt him about your nice, cool, air conditioning?”

“I guess I could.”  Chachamaru said with a smile in his voice.  “But I’ll probably just tell him about the heat bringing out your demonic side.”  They talked a little longer before saying goodbye.

After some thoroughly rigorous calisthenics (the standard for rigorous being a little more lax in this stifling weather), Gackt flopped back down, this time on the cool tile floor of the kitchen, water bottle nearby.  He felt a bit like an idiot for working out in the middle of the day like this, but at the same time, he’d never admit it out loud.  If only You would give in.

How long he lay there, he wasn’t entirely sure.  He drifted off to an uneasy doze, until he was jolted awake by his phone signaling him.

It was another text message from You.  He read it quickly, an evil smile forming on his face.  “I can’t take it anymore, and you’re exercising?  I give up!”  Grinning wickedly, he hurriedly typed a response.

“Honestly, don’t you know not to mess with me by now?”

Finally, he could turn on the air conditioning.  And walk around naked if he liked.

Gackt wins again.
